The original Metzger honey dough is “cooked” exclusively with honey from Austria and stored raw for over half a year. This allows the dough to mature naturally before it is processed into Lebkuchen with only spices, without the addition of eggs, fat, preservatives, or flavorings.
Thanks to the honey in the dough, the Lebkuchen cookies have a particularly long shelf life. If the Lebkuchen cookies become dry, Oma Metzger recommends placing them in a container overnight with a sliced apple.
