Lebkuchen Traditionshaus Vienna AT 2019
A tradition returns: Viennese Lebkuchen may be less well known than its Nuremberg counterpart, but it has a very eventful history. Founded as a candle and Lebkuchen manufactory, the company now known as “Metzger & Söhne” shaped the development of Viennese Lebkuchen over centuries.
Lebkuchen Pop-Up Store on
The former Imperial and Royal Court supplier, which disappeared from Stephansplatz in 2013 after 250 years, is now opening a pop-up store on
Mariahilfer Straße. A flagship store in the 1st district is being planned to permanently bring the beloved tradition and the finest Viennese Lebkuchen back to the city. The handmade Viennese creations delight in lovingly designed gift packaging and sweeten the
pre-Christmas season.
Delicacy with history
When a journeyman from Germany married into the existing company in the 17th century and brought the secrets of the Lebkuchen stronghold of the time into production, the vision of this regionally handcrafted delicacy was born at the highest level. The finest Lebkuchen products are created by combining know-how and craftsmanship with regional ingredients of the highest quality. Today, the company “Metzger & Söhne” is in the hands of Lukas Linsbichler and his wife Ashuveen, descendants of the company founder Ernest Metzger.
Imperial and Royal Court supplier: Maria Theresa loved “Metzger & Söhne”
Maria Theresa was a Lebkuchen fan and appointed the company now known as “Metzger & Söhne,” founded in 1685 in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna, as an Imperial and Royal Court supplier because of its delicious creations made of the finest chocolate, fragrant nuts, the finest marzipan, and the best preserves.
For the creations, just as today, only ingredients of the highest quality make their way into the dough. From the finest organic honey from regional beekeepers to delicious preserves, crunchy nuts, and the best marzipan, only the finest ingredients are processed using traditional craftsmanship. This has been done in Vienna for over 330 years.
Pop-Up Winter Garden on Mariahilfer Straße
This Lebkuchen tradition returns to the heart of the city. A true “Winter Garden” is opening on Mariahilfer Straße for gourmets young and old. Creations made of Lebkuchen and the finest ingredients are classically and lovingly packaged and invite you to discover and taste them.
“We offer our customers traditional Lebkuchen with organic honey from Austria in an extravagant style. We take a lot of time for the traditional craftsmanship and process the best ingredients exactly as we did 330 years ago. That’s simply how it tastes best, and everyone should treat themselves or their loved ones to something special every now and then,” says Managing Director Lukas Linsbichler.
Long tradition at Metzger & Söhne
Metzger & Söhne not only brought Lebkuchen to Vienna, but also perfected the creations with the finest chocolate, regional honey, nuts, and preserves to satisfy the highest demands of the Viennese Court. The company was founded in 1685 in Perchtoldsdorf, and from 1763 to 2013, there was a flagship store at Vienna’s Stephansplatz.
Traditional craftsmanship in Lebkuchen production holds a very high place in the company. As a result, the Metzger family has shaped the history of Viennese Lebkuchen like no other. For over 300 years, natural and regional ingredients of the best quality have been used—without preservatives. Even today, the brand’s credo is to produce only the finest handmade Lebkuchen creations.
