A tradition returns: The Viennese Lebkuchen may be less well-known than its Nuremberg counterpart, but it has a very eventful history. Founded as a candle and gingerbread manufacturer, the company now known as "Metzger & Söhne" shaped the emergence of the Viennese Lebkuchen for centuries.

The former K.u.K. Hoflieferant, which disappeared from Stephansplatz in 2013 after 250 years, is now operating a pop-up store on
Mariahilfer Straße. A flagship store in the 1st district is being planned to bring the cherished tradition and finest Viennese Lebkuchen back to the city permanently. The handmade Viennese creations delight in lovingly designed gift packaging and sweeten the
pre-Christmas season.

Deliciousness with history

When a journeyman from Germany married into the existing company in the 17th century and brought the secrets of the then Lebkuchen stronghold into the production, the vision of this regionally handcrafted nibbling at the highest level was born. The combination of know-how as well as craftsmanship and regional ingredients of the highest quality results in the finest Lebkuchen products. Today, the company "Metzger & Söhne" is in the hands of Lukas Linsbichler and his wife Ashuveen, descendants of the company founder Ernest Metzger.

Maria Theresa was a fan of Lebkuchen and appointed the company, now known as "Metzger & Söhne", founded in 1685 in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna, as a purveyor to the imperial and royal court because of its delicious creations made of the most delicate chocolate, fragrant nuts, the finest marzipan and the best jams. Today, as in the past, only the highest quality ingredients find their way into the dough for the creations. From the finest organic honey from regional beekeepers to delicious jams, crunchy nuts and the best marzipan, only the best ingredients are processed in traditional craftsmanship. This Lebkuchen tradition returns to the heart of the city. A true "winter garden" for gourmets big and small opens on Mariahilferstraße. Creations made from Lebkuchen and the finest ingredients are classically and lovingly packaged and invite you to discover and taste them.

"We offer our customers traditional Lebkuchen with organic honey from Austria in an extravagant guise. We take a lot of time for the traditional craftsmanship and process the best ingredients just like 330 years ago. It simply tastes best this way, everyone should treat themselves or their loved ones to something special every now and then," says managing director Lukas Linsbichler.

Long tradition at Metzger & Söhne

Metzger & Söhne not only brought the Lebkuchen to Vienna, but perfected the creations with the finest chocolate, regional honey, nuts as well as jams to satisfy the highest demands of the Viennese court. The company was founded in Perchtoldsdorf in 1685 and from 1763 to 2013 there was a flagship store on Vienna's Stephansplatz.

Traditional craftsmanship in the production of gingerbread has a very high priority in the company. As a result, the family Metzger has shaped the history of Viennese gingerbread like no other. For over 300 years, natural and regional ingredients of the best quality have been used - without preservatives. Today, as in the past, the brand's credo is to produce only the finest Lebkuchen creations by hand.
